FAQs

Frequently asked questions about our one of a kind Whiskey Barrel products:

  • What exactly are barrel staves?

Barrel staves are the elegantly curved oak slats originally used to construct whiskey barrels. Each stave is approximately 35 inches in length, though slight variations of up to one inch are natural. The staves are widest at the center (ranging from 1" to 6") and gently taper toward each end, offering a distinctive and organic aesthetic perfect for custom wall applications.

  • Why is the back of the stave blackened?

The blackened surface is the result of the charring process used in whiskey aging—a hallmark of authentic barrel wood. While most of this char is removed during preparation, a light residue may remain. It is dusty by nature and can transfer to hands, flooring, and surfaces.

Professional Tip: For installations near carpet or fine flooring, protective covering is recommended during handling and installation.

  • What is the circular hole in some staves?

Some staves may include the original bung hole, which was used to fill and empty the barrel. Rather than a flaw, this is a signature feature of genuine reclaimed barrel wood, adding character and story to your installation.

  • Are the staves finished or sealed?

No, the staves are sanded and burred for a refined yet rustic texture, but they are not pre-finished with any sealants.

  • Is this a DIY-friendly product?

    Absolutely not.

These staves are intended for use by professional craftsmen, custom builders, and experienced carpenters. The installation requires precise wall preparation, surface leveling, and exacting layout to ensure the final result matches the high standards of a custom build.

  • What installation methods are available?

There are two premium installation patterns:

    • Horizontal (woven-style layout)
    • Vertical (traditional upright layout)

Each offers a unique visual effect and requires specific preparation, including black backing and substrate support to ensure proper nailing and finish detail.

  • Is special wall preparation required?

Yes. These are not peel-and-stick panels. Proper backing—such as plywood or OSB—is essential for a secure hold. Additionally, wall surfaces should be blacked out with black paint or black craft paper to maintain visual depth, as staves do not create a seamless surface.

Outlets and switches must be framed out with wood to accommodate the thickness of the staves and maintain accessibility and code compliance.

  • How much material should I order?

Due to trimming and pattern alignment, expect approximately 10–15% waste during installation. We strongly recommend accounting for this overage in your material order to ensure a seamless result.

  • How are the staves packaged and sold?

All orders are shipped in bundles of 10 square feet. For custom projects, larger quantities and bulk purchasing are available upon request.

If you're working with a designer, builder, or architect, we’re happy to provide additional specifications, layout guidance, or reference images. These staves are ideal for man caves, bars, feature walls, tasting rooms, and luxury interiors where character and craftsmanship meet.
